We woke this morning with great news that the New Orleans Saints are going to the Super Bowl, but unfortunately it wasn’t a great morning for one of my clients. It seems one of his competitors file a claim against him in the Rip off Report.

After a 20 min rant I was able to calm him down and let him know that having your name in the Rip off Report is not the kiss of death that it uses to be. The biggest issue many of my clients have with Rip off Report is the lack of integrity of the site. There are no systems or policies in place to check the validity of the claims.

As I reviewed the claim file against my client I discovered something I have never seen before on many of my recent trips to their website, it seems they are actually in the Reputation Recovery Business. Yes that’s right, the Rip of Report is actually in the reputation recovery business therefore there is an added incentive for them in allowing anyone to make a false claim against a business.

As I reviewed their Corporate Advocacy program I realized that the reason they would allow all claims to post on their site is because they actually want to charge you thousands of dollars to have it removed. This is the same slimy practice used by the big three credit reporting agencies that sell you their own version of a FICO score.

With all of the good that the internet has brought to our lives unfortunately here is one the most damaging effects of an unregulated Information Super Highway. Whenever a legitimate business can have a spotless reputation destroyed by a competitor is only trying to gain a competitive edge, has to be something congress takes a closer look at. My client will still have to pay to have this issue resolved because Rip off will not remove it unless you pay them to do so, which is criminal.

Like I said earlier the Rip off Report is not the kiss of death that it use to be, and there are several companies that have surfaced in recent years just to combat this issue. The good news for my client was I was able to set him up on a payment plan and resolve his false complaint by attacking the item that appeared under his name in the search engines.

If no one can see the Rip off report then it becomes irrelevant, this is the service I provide for my clients. In less than a month I was able to bury that negative report on the 12 page of his search results. Being that 93% of customer only view first page results when making purchasing decisions, the 12 page is as close to invisible as you can get.

Shame on you Rip off Report!

I am all for verification companies and websites that are legitimate consumer advocacy organizations, but with the emergence companies like Rip off Report all creditability has been thrown out the window.

My issue with them is not based on their ethical policies, it’s entirely based on the practices that they allow which has proven to be damaging to the reputations of legitimate business owner.

Rip off Report will allow anyone to make or submit a claim about anybody with little or no proof of the validity of the claim. Our website has received countless requests for services because of what I call a lack of complaint creditability. In many ways I should probability stop writing about this topic because the majority of my customers come to us because someone has submitted their name to the Rip off Report.

It is companies like Rip that gives my industry a much needed shot in the arm, and I thank them for the business. My Grandmother had a saying that “two wrongs don’t make a right” and this saying couldn’t be more appropriate for a time such as now.

The first “wrong” is anyone can file a complaint in Rip off Report whether it’s a disgruntle customer, or a competitor who simply would like to gain a competitive edge. There is not method to the madness.
